Thai Sticky Rice Pudding, Delicious Khao Laam Thai Food Dish
Sunday, September 20th, 2009What Is Khao Lhaam. How Do You Eat The Bamboo Sticky Rice Dish.
Khao laam is a famous Thai rice pudding dish made from sticky rice. The very interesting thing about this sticky rice sweet dish is that, it is cooked in a bamboo stick. Many people who are not familiar with Thai food believe that the mixture of sticky rice, coconut milk and sugar is first cooked and then filled into the bamboo stick. The truth is that the mixture is filled into a bamboo stick before being cooked. The bamboo stick is then closed on the open end with banana leaves that have been folded. The bamboo is then cooked for several hours, the bamboos show burn marks on the outside. The above image shows a bunch of sticky rice in bamboo stick pieces where the top layer of the bamboo has been stripped off. This gives the sticks a clean and neat appearance.
The mixture that is filled into the bamboo stick includes sticky rice, sugar and coconut milk. Black beans are sometimes added to the mixture too. Since this is a traditional Thai food, there is no strict recipe recorded to make this sticky rice sweet dish. You will find that some vendors add a lot of sugar while some add moderate sugar quantities when making the dish. The ingredients used to make the mixture are generally vegetarian, but verifying this with the vendor would be a good idea. If you decide to buy a few of these bamboo pieces, ask the vendor to split the bamboos for you. It might not be easy for you to do this at home or in a hotel room. We have a clearer picture of how the Khao laam appears when the bamboo is split open, you can see the image and gain a better insight into this Thai food dish at http://www.thaifood.food-recipe-cooking.com/sticky-rice-in-bamboo-khao-laam-thai-food.htm
