Low Cost Airlines, Safety and Health

Sunday, October 14th, 2007

Just how low cost airlines are able to offer very low airfares remains a mystery. There are a few cost cutting measures put in place like, offering snacks instead of lunches, reducing the onboard staff, offering only plain water and fruit juices instead of hard drinks etc. But, do these cost factors really contribute to a major cost share? Are regular airlines making unfair profits when they charge almost twice as the low cost airlines?

On another note, many low cost airlines are gradually moving beyond their local domestic flying routes and flying to nearyby countries. This could pose a possible health risk to flyers of low cost airlines. Most low cost airlines seem to pack extra seats into an aircraft. This is possibly one way of reducing costs. Sitting in cramped postures for long durations could be one of the major causes of DVT or Deep Vein Thrombosis. This medical condition could be fatal. Another problem is that many low cost airlines rely on old refurbished aircraft, this could pose a technical risk when flying long distances.

These are just a few issues that need to be discussed and debated.
