Silver Chains, The Durability Of Silver Chains

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

There are different types of silver chains, the design and weight of each silver chain will greatly influence it’s durability. This does mean that some silver chains are best taken off when sleeping, while others can be worn all day and night.

Silver chains with a flat design style (eg.SVC-02) can get damaged or at least go out of shape, if bent at sharp angles. This is a great design and has a neat and ‘ironed’ appearance, give it a little care and it will keep looking gorgeous for a long time. It would be a good idea to take off such silver chains when sleeping or lying down. Such chains are also suitable for lengths between 15 inches to 18 inches. Beyond these lengths, it becomes difficult to keep them from folding or bending.

Another type of silver chain is the rounded design. A very stylish concept, machine made to perfection. Such silver chains are once again, prone to showing ‘bend marks’ if sharply pressed at acute angles. Good for solid looking pedants that are made to hug the neckline. An, example is the SVC-03. Avoid lengths beyond 18 inches as it might be difficult to manage.

Many people would like to wear their silver chain all the while and never take it off. It is not uncommon for people to wear their silver chains and pendants even when bathing or sleeping. A perfect example is silver chains worn with religious pendants like, the cross or even the ankh pendant. The SVC-01  would be the perfect silver chain in such cases. The loose link design means that, the silver chain can be bent to any angle and does not get any permanent ‘bend’ marks. The design is suitable for long or short chains and can be worn by ladies or men.

Remember that in all cases, good silver weight will add to the durability of your silver chain. Good design is not a substitute for good weight and vice versa. A light weight silver chain like those peddled in TV channels and discount stores are pure junk. They are flimsy and weight around 2 to 3 grams. Such chains knot up and become useless after a few weeks of months. They can snap easily and cause your silver pendant to drop off. Such marketing gimmicks are somehow carried out with much hype and publicity and draw little criticism from consumer awareness groups.

Silver Chain, Choosing A Silver Chain

Thursday, October 4th, 2007

Choosing a silver chain involves a few issues that need to be considered. If you are buying a silver chain to be worn without any pendant, then choose a design that is not very simple or very thin. A very thin silver chain with no pendant to wear would move around very easily and become inconvenient to wear.

If your silver chain is to be worn along with a pendant, make sure that the basic style of the chain matches the design of the pendant. For example, a heavy silver chain would overshadow a small and tiny pendant. In the same way, a thin and light weight silver chain would look akward if worn with a big heavy pendant.

Try to avoid silver chains that are plated with gold, rhodium or any other metal. All plating on silver jewelry will wear off with time, the wearing off will not be unifor. This would leave your plated silver chain looking patchy and terrible.
